Avon Cycles was founded in 1948 by the Pahwa brothers as a manufacturing unit of saddles and brakes for bicycles in Ludhiana, Punjab. Pahwa Brothers - Sardar Hansraj, Sardar Jagat Singh, and Sardar Sohan Lal, have a dream of providing affordable mobility to the general public after the independence and partition of the country. That is when Avon Cycles came into the cycle industry. Since then, the company’s humble beginning transformed into one of the largest and oldest bicycle manufacturers in India.
At the time of the company’s inception, India was heavily reliant on imports to provide bicycles for the public. Pahwa brothers, thus, aimed to establish an in-house manufacturing facility to provide quality bicycles at affordable prices in the country. Their journey began with a manufacturing license obtained in 1951, and by 1965, Avon expanded its reach internationally by exporting bicycles to Afghanistan.
Avon operates a couple of manufacturing facilities in Ludhiana, and one in Hajipur, Patna, Bihar including a state-of-the-art plant dedicated to producing aluminum frames and complete bicycles. This facility is designed to meet both domestic and international quality standards and has an annual production capacity of over 3 million bicycles. The company employs advanced manufacturing techniques such as MIG and TIG welding to ensure precision and durability in its products.
Additionally, Avon Cycles has integrated sustainability into its business model. The company promotes eco-friendly transportation solutions through its electric vehicle offerings and emphasises the importance of cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. With over 70 years of experience, Avon’s image is developed not only as a bicycle manufacturer but also as a promoter of healthier lifestyles.
Growth and Diversification
When the company began producing bicycles, the quality was great, the pricing was reasonable, and the business practices were ethical. These practices helped Pahwa brothers to gain the trust and acceptance of the promoters and investors which helped the company to scale. As said, Pahwas developed trust brick by brick. Then over time, the numbers continued to increase, and Avon has been one of the top performers ever since. The trust and credibility of the investors resulted in long-lasting commercial relationships with a large network of dealers in India and overseas.
Avon increased its international reach in 1964, setting everlasting standards in Europe, Africa, Dubai, Mexico, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Sri Lanka. Avon is a quality, belief, and value-driven brand that provides people with an efficient and sustainable way of transportation across the globe now.
Moreover, Avon Cycles' product line has diversified greatly over the decades. In 2007, the company expanded into electric mobility by releasing E-Scooters, E-Rickshaws, and E-Carts under the "E World of Avon" brand. Furthermore, in 2013, Avon launched its exercise equipment brand called "Avon Fitness," catering to the expanding health-conscious customers across the country.
Market Presence and Future Prospects
Avon Cycles has built a significant presence both domestically and internationally. Since the mid-1960s, the company has grown its exports to different countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Talking about Avon's expansion strategy, it includes a "Market Dominance Project," which aims to increase its market dominance in both premium and budget segments while catering to varied regional tastes and preferences across India.
Recent Developments
In 2023, Avon Cycles got an entry to the European market by investing 100 crores in a new production site near Ludhiana which further enhanced the company’s international presence.
