What is an Electric Bicycle?

An electric bike, or e-bike, is a bicycle equipped with a motor powered by a rechargeable battery that provides assistance while pedaling. The motor engages to help with riding, making it easier to tackle hills or cover long distances with minimal effort. Electric bikes offer multiple modes, allowing cyclists to balance the amount of power provided by the motor with range and battery life.

In general, the motor is limited to an output of 250 watts, with a maximum speed limit of 25 km/h.

In many cases, batteries can be removed for charging, while others need to be charged while still attached to the cycle. You can plug the battery into any home charging point. An electric cycle typically offers three to five levels of assistance, selectable via its controller.

Electric cycles are heavier than non-assisted bikes due to the variation in motor and battery weights. The lightest systems weigh around 4 kg, but most e-bicycles weigh between 6 kg and 8 kg, or even more.

The range of electric cycle batteries can vary from 20 to 100 miles or more on a full charge, depending on their capacity, which is measured in watt-hours (Wh). Batteries are expensive, and e-cycles with a longer range tend to cost more.

There are several types of electric cycles:

  • Electric hybrid cycles feature flat handlebars and tough, puncture-resistant tires, making them ideal for commuting, running errands, or casual rides.
  • Electric mountain cycles come with powerful motors that deliver high torque, perfect for tackling rugged off-road trails and steep climbs.
  • Electric road cycles are designed with lightweight frames and drop handlebars, offering better handling and speed, especially for uphill rides.
  • Electric gravel cycles are equipped with wider tires for confident off-road riding, while their drop handlebars maintain road biking speed.
  • Electric folding cycles are compact and portable, ideal for commuters who combine cycling with public transport.
  • Electric cargo cycles are designed to carry heavy loads, providing an eco-friendly alternative to cars or delivery vans.
